Answers
Should I boil the water for the preparation of bottle-feeding?
Biobim advises to always boil the water for the preparation of bottle-feeding. Just bringing it quickly to the boil suffices to see to it that bacteria cannot multiply themselves in the food.
How can I bring along bottle-feeding?
Boil the necessary amount of water and bring it with you in a thermos. Put the necessary amount of BiobimLac (powder) in a small box or sachet. In this way, you only have to add the powder to the bottle and shake it on location. Re-heating is not necessary (the water remains warm in the thermos); please do check whether the temperature of the bottle you made is not too high for your baby.
Why follow-on milk and why not ordinary milk?
Cow’s milk contains a huge amount of proteins and sodium (salt). This can prove to be a burden to the kidneys of your baby. Apart from that, cow’s milk contains too little iron and vitamins for little children under the age of 1.
BiobimLac follow-on milk is adjusted to the food needs of a baby as of six months old. It contains the correct amount of nutrients, vitamins and minerals that is needed for the growth and development of your baby.
How long can I keep a jar of Biobim?
When unopened, a jar of Biobim can be kept until the date that is stated on the lid. Once the jar has been opened, it should be kept in the refrigerator. It should then be closed properly and be used within 48 hours. Unopened jars are sealed airtight in such a way that you can simply keep them in a kitchen cupboard. Of course, it is permitted to keep them in the refrigerator, but that is absolutely not necessary. Opened jars however should always be kept in the refrigerator.
The jars of Biobim have some sort of a guarantee lid. If before opening the jar “clicks” when pressed, you should not use its contents.
Is it safe to feed my child with only vegetarian food?
Of course, your little child can be raised without meat. As of six months, children are allowed to eat meat, but you can replace this by:
40 g boiled dried legumes
30 g tofu (bean curd)
½ egg
20 g soaked soy bits
30 g quorn
20 g read-to-use meat replacement
How can I start best with supplementary feeding?
Between four and six months of age you can start with supplementary feeding, such as adding Biobim Baby rice meal to the breastfeeding or bottle-feeding. The first vegetable or fruit snack can be introduced. It is best to start with one type of vegetable or fruit. In this way, your baby can slowly become accustomed to new, soft flavours. If this goes well, other flavours can be tried out as well.
The bottle-feeding does not dissolve properly; why is that?
See to it that the water has the correct temperature when you add the powder (around 37 °C). If the water is too hot or too cold, the powder dissolves less good. See to it that the bottle is shaken properly.
Does my child need vitamin D drops apart from follow-on milk?
The Dutch Health Council states that an infant needs 10µg vitamin D extra per day.
Why is it necessary to swallow folic acid?
Folic acid plays an important role in the creation of the nervous system, which is created from the first day after the conception. The use of folic acid decreases the chances of a ‘neural tube defect’ such as spina bifida and other birth defects. By using 400 mcgs folic acid per day, the chances of this defect decrease with more than 50%. Women who want to become pregnant are therefore advised to take a supplement from four weeks before the conception until eight weeks thereafter with 400-500 micrograms (0.4-0.5 mg) folic acid per day, regardless of the amount of folic acid they swallow through their normal food.
I just became pregnant and did not use folic acid tablets yet; can I still do that?
If before your pregnancy you did not take folic acid, it is advised to start from the moment you know that you are pregnant. The advice is then to take 400-500 mcgs of folic acid per day until at least 8 weeks of the pregnancy (= 10 weeks after the last menstruation). Taking folic acid for a longer period of time constitutes no problems.
With which vegetables or fruit can I start best?
It is best to start with the single vegetable or fruit snacks from Biobim after four months. These vegetable and fruit snacks are finely pureed and have a soft flavour. Boiled vegetables such as cauliflower, carrot, pumpkin and broccoli are suited as a first snack. Do not add salt when boiling! Firstly, the vegetables have to be sieved. Once your child has become used to this, you can also mash it finely. Suitable fruit sorts to start with are for example bananas, apples, pears, peaches.
My baby does not make it through the night; can I add some rice meal to the food?
As of four months, you may add Biobim Baby rice meal to the food. It is important through to start with a tablespoon. Your baby can then slowly become accustomed to the new foodstuff. Biobim Baby sees to it that there is some more energy in the food, and your baby can last longer when sleeping.
How often should my baby have its bowel movements?
Just like with grown-up people, it differs per baby how often it has its bowel movements. It is not necessarily so that your baby poops its diapers every day. Some babies have bowel movements thrice a day, others once every three days. As long as this does not bother your baby and it grows well, this is not a problem.
Why is there BiobimLac 3?
After 12 months the kidneys of your child can properly process the proteins and salts from ordinary milk. You could then switch to ordinary milk. However, the composition of BiobimLac 3 is better tuned to the needs of the growing-up baby/toddler. BiobimLac 3 contains healthy (vegetable) fatty acids, iron and other important nutrients. Apart from that, BiobimLac 3 is the only organic follow-on milk as of 10 months that contains probiotics for a proper, natural functioning of the intestines.
What is nitrate and what contains a lot of nitrate?
According to a national advice of experts, until the age of six months vegetables that are low in nitrate are advised. By nature nitrate occurs in food. Vegetables are an important source of nitrate (for example spinach, beetroot, endive, purslane, lettuce, pointed cabbage, etc.).
Do not give vegetables that are rich in nitrate to children under six months, and do not give them more than twice a week to children older than six months.
Biobim sees to safe vegetable snacks by selecting especially grown ingredients and controlled Demeter growth methods.
What is gluten?
Gluten is a protein that exists in wheat, rye, oat and barley. Some children are over-sensitive to gluten. The national advice is not to give children under six months of age foodstuffs that contain gluten. Because of this, possible over-sensitivity reactions are postponed and become less severe. All Biobim products for children until and including seven months are free of gluten. All products until one year of age are free of wheat.
What does ‘organic’ mean?
Essentially, ‘organic’ means: created as naturally as possible, with as few artificial processes as possible. Therefore, in organic agriculture no fertiliser and no chemical/synthetic pesticides are used. Apart from that, animals are kept under circumstances that are as natural as possible, also when it comes to their food. Furthermore, no genetically modified organisms are applied. Many organic agricultural products are processed to foodstuffs (e.g. bakery, dairy factory). At that, no artificial additives are used.
The objective of organic agriculture is to maintain the natural balance between man, plant and animal. This not only concerns the agricultural branch but also our living environment as a whole.

They are grown without fertiliser and chemical/synthetic pesticides and may therefore show the EKO quality mark. Demeter farmers go one-step further when it comes to organic agriculture. With supportive measures they pursue a new natural balance as a basis for food full of vigour.
